How To Prepare For The ASQ CRE Exam (And OtherASQ Exams)

For those wishing to take the ASQ Certified Reliability Engineer Exam and other ASQ exams within this testing window, I am sure you are knee-deep in preparation already if you are using the self-study route.

I have received many requests asking which material to use and if I have the soft copies of recent editions of the ASQ-CRE Handbook.

I have only purchased physical copies for my exam preparation. The extra funds spent on these materials gives an extra boost to prepare for these exams. Also, these materials remain mine forever and I can always have them as a reference.

However, I do understand that many do not have adequate financial resources to purchase text for preparation. Also, geographical barriers (Outside US shipping costs add a chunk to purchasing cost) also play a part.

Hence, below is my advice for preparing for the CRE exam.

If funds and shipping are not an issue, the following steps apply (excluding shipping):

  1. Register as a member ($185 as at July 2025)
  2. Register for the exam ($433 as at July 2025). Fix a date (3-4 months of study required)
  3. Download the 2025 ASQ CRE-Bok
  4. Purchase the ASQ Handbook. The recent edition remains 3rd Edition by Mark Durivage although a new BoK has been released. ($94 for members)
  5. Purchase ASQ question bank on the website. This is an online practice question bank. ($109 for non-members as at July 2025)
  6. Purchase the CRE Primer from the Quality Council of Indiana ($85)
  7. Purchase the CRE 1000 Question bank from QCI ($90). I advise buying the thumb drive as it remains with you even after installation. There is also the online option valid for 1 year ($70/Yr).

If funds and shipping are an issue, the below steps apply:

  1. Register as a member ($185)
  2. Register for the exam ($433). Fix a date (3-4 months of study required)
  3. Download the 2025 ASQ CRE-BoK
  4. Purchase the ASQ Handbook. The recent edition remains 3rd Edition by Mark Durivage although a new BoK has been released. ($94 for members)
  5. Purchase ASQ question bank on the website. This is an online practice question bank. ($109 for non-members)
  6. Purchase the CRE 1000 Question bank online version valid for 1 year ($70/Yr).

Note: The 2025 handbook contains elements of Project Management in Pillar I Section 5. So, you should get familiar with elements of project management.
