The job market is currently saturated with Fresh Graduates and Experienced professionals. The number of layoffs is disheartening.
The future for Fresh Graduates is growing dimmer by the day as AI is beginning to perform the tasks that graduates will typically perform and grow on the job.
- ConocoPhillips is planning to cut 20–25% of its global workforce (≈ 2,600-3,250 jobs
- Chevron Corporation announced plans to lay off 15–20% of its global workforce by end of 2026 (≈ ~6,000-9,000 jobs if workforce ~45,600).
- Exxon Mobil Corporation will lay off ~2,000 employees globally (≈ 3-4% of its global workforce).
- BP announced layoffs of around 7,000 jobs globally, as part of cost-cutting measures.
- OMV Aktiengesellschaft: Austrian oil & gas group planning to cut ~2,000 jobs (≈ 8.6% of global workforce of ~23,000).
- Amazon announced 10,000 job cuts.
My Advice to Fresh Graduates: Learn a Trade!!
Below is a list of trade skills that are highly in demand
Technical & Mechanical Trades
- Electrician work – wiring, maintenance, solar installation
- Plumbing – residential and commercial water systems
- Refrigeration & Air Conditioning (HVAC) – always in demand
- Automotive repair & diagnostics – cars, bikes, EVs
- Welding & fabrication – metal works, construction, pipelines
- Machining or CNC operation – manufacturing & precision parts
- Diesel engine maintenance – for trucks, generators, heavy equipment
Construction & Building Skills
- Masonry / Tiling – bricklaying, floor/wall finishing
- Carpentry & woodwork – furniture, interior fittings
- Painting & interior finishing – residential and commercial
- Scaffolding / rigging – especially valuable for construction projects
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang stated ““If you’re an electrician, if you’re a plumber, a carpenter — we’re going to need hundreds of thousands of them to build all these factories.”
He described the skilled‐craft segment of every economy as “going to see a boom” due to the massive build-out of AI infrastructure, data centers, factories, etc.
Traditional white-collar or purely “tech” careers aren’t the only route to high earnings; trades can become very valuable soon.
Trades like plumbing, electrical work, carpentry are getting new recognition in the tech era thanks to the physical infrastructure behind digital services.
So, while you wait for that next position as a graduate, learn a skill that doesn’t have to do with sitting behind a computer screen.
